Food-services contract on UCA board agenda

The Board of Trustees for the University of Central Arkansas will take up the college's food services contract when it holds its next meeting in April.

The current contract with Aramark, which has been the school's vendor for 36 years, expires May 30.

Two proposals were submitted, one from Aramark and the other from Sodexo. Those proposals were evaluated by a committee and analyzed by three business professors.

Both groups were in agreement in continuing with Aramark.

UCA President Tom Courtway will recommend to the board that the university continue its agreement with Aramark.

If the university doesn't continue with Aramark, it will owe the vendor for capital investments made to the campus over the past few years.Under the 2005 agreement, that includes paying the unamortized principal balance of the investments, plus interest at the prime interest rate plus two percent back to the date of the original investment. That totals $6.79 million.

Last year, Allen Meadors resigned as UCA president after it was discovered that a $700,000 offer from Aramark was contingent upon renewal of Aramark’s contract for seven years and not a donation as the trustees had been told.

Also at the meeting on April 2, the board will approve new room and board rates as well as take up additional funding for the Student Government Association's "Big Project," an amphitheater between the Student Center and Old Main.
