GOP cake mocks health-care law’s birth

— The chairman of the state Republican Party delivered a cake Friday to the state Democratic Party’s headquarters in Little Rock to commemorate the second anniversary of Democratic President Barack Obama’s signing of the federal health-care law approved in 2010 by a Democratic-controlled Congress.

Frosting on the cake states, “Obamacare, Two Years, Too Many.”

Chairman Doyle Webb said he believes that Friday will be the last birthday for what he called “President Barack Obama’s disastrous health-care overhaul.”

The U.S. Supreme Court will either strike down the law or Republicans will win majorities in the House and Senate and their nominee will oust Obama in this year’s general election and the law will be repealed, he said.

Democratic Party spokesman Candace Martin said she and the party’s chief financial officer, Angela Bradford, received the cake.

“We thanked them, and I believe I made a joke about how I didn’t need any more sweets,” she said. The uneaten cake was on a desk at the party’s headquarters. “It’s an interesting way to spend their time, money, and energy, though, when Arkansans are wondering if Republicans in Arkansas will support the latest radical budget from [GOP Rep. Paul] Ryan that was unveiled recently.”

Martin said the party will send the cake as “condolences to all the Arkansas seniors that will be kicked off Medicare, students that will lose their Pell grants to go to college and children getting kicked out of Head Start if [Republican U.S. Reps.] Tim Griffin and Rick Crawford get their way and pass the GOP Paul Ryan budget.”

Asked about Webb’s contention that this will be the last birthday for the federal health care law, Martin said, “That’s for the court to decide. ...”
