— 100 YEARS AGO March 27, 1912

When neighbors yesterday afternoon saw smoke issuing from the kitchen of the home of Mrs. M.M. Gaynon, 423 East Third street, someone hastily turned in an alarm of fire. Fire Companies Nos. 2 and 4 rushed to the scene, but were able to find no traces of fire in the deserted house until they reached the kitchen; there, sitting on the gas range, was a pot of meat completely ruined.

50 YEARS AGO March 27, 1962

Seven men and a woman charged last month with keeping gambling houses in connection with pinball payoffs, were bound over to Pulaski Circuit Court today from Little Rock Municipal Court. In so ruling, Judge Quinn Glover said that he thought it in the public interest that the question be settled once and for all, referring presumably to the pinball question. (Pros Atty. John T. Jernigan has taken the position that pinball machines on which payoffs are made should be in the same legal category as other gambling devices which are outlawed.)

25 YEARS AGO March 27, 1987

The FBI has begun an investigation into apparent irregularities in federal grant programs administered by the North Little Rock Community Development Agency, an FBI spokesman said Thursday. The apparent irregularities were reported this week by the Arkansas Democrat as part of an ongoing review of the Community Development Agency. They included issuance of housing rehabilitation grants to five deceased people, issuance of grants for work that was not performed or finished, allegations of shoddy workmanship by grant recipients and missing or altered grant documents.

10 YEARS AGO March 27, 2002

Entire families can be evicted from public housing if a member is caught using or selling illegal drugs, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday, upholding a policy that has been in place nationwide for years. Housing officials in Little Rock and around the nation say the “one strike, you’re out” rule will make housing projects safer and more livable, while opponents worry that too many innocent people will end up homeless.
