Arkansas achievers

— The Arkansas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts has named four teachers of the year. They are: Debbie West from Jonesboro’s Fox Meadow Intermediate Center, elementary grades category. West is a National Writing Project teacher consultant and the technology liaison for the Arkansas Delta Writing Project site at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.

Jamie Highfill, from Woodland Junior High School in Fayetteville, middle-level grades category. Highfill codirects the Northwest Arkansas Writing Project summer writing institute for teachers.

Tara Seale, from Bryant High School, secondary grades category. Seale won the 2010 Arkansas Public School Resource Center Measures of Academic Progress Growth Award.

Steven Lance, from the University of Central Arkansas, college level. Lance is a professor in the English Department at UCA. He is the author of several books.

The Thea Foundation has announced the winners of its 2012 Performing Arts Scholarship Competition.

John Hatfield, a senior at Russellville High School, was earned first place and received a $4,000 scholarship.

Mary-Katelin Ward, a senior at North Little Rock High School-West, earned second place and received a $3,500 scholarship.

Stacy Hawking, a senior at North Little Rock High School-West, earned third place and received a $3,000 scholarship.

Sara Williams, a homeschooled senior, earned fourth place and received a $2,500 scholarship.

Meredith Short, a senior at North Little Rock High School-West, earned fifth place and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Dominic Smith, a senior at Rogers Heritage High School, earned sixth place and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Elizabeth Wheeler, a homeschooled senior, earned seventh place and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Walter Dodd, a senior at Parkview Magnet High School, earned eighth place and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Scott Worth, a senior at Cabot High School, earned ninth place and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Ashley Tramel, a senior at Russellville High School, earned 10th place and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Brent Curry of London, a senior at Russellville High School, has been awarded a University Honors Scholarship from Arkansas Tech University. He is the son of George and Pam Curry and intends to study pre-pharmacy.

John Clark, fruit breeder and university professor of horticulture for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, was presented the North American Raspberry and Blackberry Association’s Distinguished Service Award. The award honors Clark’s work as a breeder of many of the leading blackberry varieties grown today.

Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to those for their achievements.

Civilian and military achievements are accepted.

Please follow these guidelines: Achiever(s): 1) Must be an Arkansan or have graduated from a school in Arkansas.

2) Received an award, scholarship, medal or promotion.

Pageants, deans’ lists, graduations or military enlistments are not accepted.

No photographs please.
