SUPERMARKET SLEUTH

Would you like fries with all those sweets?

— Over the past several years, I’ve written about products from Alexia, a company that makes a delicious array of frozen side dishes. Last year I mentioned the Sweet Potato Puffs, and at the time wrote about “Reinvent a Classic,” a contest that gave consumers an opportunity to vote for a flavor to join the company’s lineup.

The winner was Parmesan Lemon Waffle Fries, which should be in local stores now selling for about $3.50 per bag.

Alexia is holding another “Reinvent a Classic” campaign; visit Facebook.com/Alexia-Foods to vote for another flavor for the lineup for 2013. You’ve only got through Friday to vote.

If you are a fan of Sara Lee,or pound cake in general, you might want to be on the lookout for the company’s new individually wrapped pound cake slices.

The convenient slices come in original and chocolate, and will be in your grocer’s frozen pie and dessert section. A box of six slices costs about $4.

Easter is right around the corner (April 8) and for creating Easter baskets without the risk of food allergens, Gimbal’s has the answer.

Gimbal’s Fine Candies is one of the major U.S. confectionery makers committed to being made free of peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. None of those ingredients are inside the production or packaging facilities.

Its line includes Sour Bunnies, Sour Lovers, Cherry Lovers, Honey Lovers, LavaBalls, Licorice Scotties, and variety bags with 41 flavors.

From now through Saturday, consumers can visit Facebook.com/GimbalsCandy to enter the company’s Gourmet Jelly Bean Giveaway for a chance at winning 100 pounds of jelly beans.

In early February I wrote about the 100th birthday of the iconic Whitman’s Sampler, one of the most divine collections of chocolate I’ve ever seen, and the company’s “Kiss me, I’m 100” giveaway. Last week Whitman’s sent a photo of Alice Buckley of Barling, who turns 100 on April 4. The photo shows her with a huge Whitman’s Sampler, and she’s wearing her “Kiss Me, I’m 100” hat, too. Happy 100th birthday Alice!

There’s still time to enter the “Kiss Me, I’m 100” giveaway, which includes the sampler and cap. Just go to Facebook.com/WhitmansSampler. Product suggestions? Tips? Email:
