— 100 YEARS AGO March 31, 1912

At the regular meeting of the School Board held last evening, it was decided to close the Parham school for two weeks, beginning with Monday, April 1, on account of the smallpox scare in that neighborhood. The action regarding closing Parham School was taken upon the recommendation of Dr. Anderson Watkins. Upon the reopening of this school, sessions will be held Saturday mornings the remainder of the school term to make up a portion of the lost time.

50 YEARS AGO March 31, 1962

The Easter sunrise service scheduled at the state capitol apparently will be canceled due to a demand from Negro leaders that Negroes be allowed to take part in the program. Sponsors of the event, the Directors of Religious Education of Greater Little Rock, today recommended to Secretary of State Nancy Hall that the traditional service be canceled. “It’s up to them - they’re the sponsors and they are the ones who are canceling,” Mrs. Hall said. “I only prepare the capitol grounds for the event.”25 YEARS AGO March 31, 1987

Winter returned to Arkansas Monday, bringing an early-morning dusting of snow and making an impression on local weather record books. The National Weather Service at North Little Rock reported two records set by Monday’s snowfall and the possibility of record-low temperatures across the state this morning. The official snowfall measurement for Little Rock was 1.2 inches. The previous record for March 30 was a trace of snow in 1906 and 1964. The snowfall also set a new record as the latest date for measurable snowfall in Little Rock.

More than 21,000 personal bankruptcy cases were filed last year in Arkansas, and the state is on its way to another recordbreaking year if the first two months of 2002 are any indication. Arkansas’ 28 percent jump in bankruptcies during 2001, compared with 2000, beat the nationwide increase of 19 percent and ranked eighth among all states, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.
