VA Director Dave Fletcher resigns

— The head of the state’s Department of Veterans Affairs is retiring after a legislative committee questioned whether his agency suffered from lax oversight of its finances.

The Legislative Audit Division last week found problems in four areas that led to improper use of a state credit card, lost inventory and expenditures that had gone untracked.

Agency director Dave Fletcher met with Gov. Mike Beebe on Monday and said afterward he would retire immediately. Beebe thanked Fletcher for his service but said it was time for new leadership at the agency.

An audit revealed about $200,000 worth of missing or unaccounted-for equipment. Also, a department credit card was used at liquor stores, beauty salons and pet shops.

The governor could name a new director within a few days.
