— A 15-year-old Hall High School student told police she stabbed her mother's ex-boyfriend to death as the man beat her mother early Thursday morning.

According to a Little Rock Police Department report, the teen - whose name was not released because she is a juvenile - told police she got a knife to scare 44-year-old Darrell Winfrey after he pulled her mother, 38-year-old Kim Caffey, out of their home at 9712 Labette Dr. The couple had reportedly broken up the day before.

Police say the girl told investigators she approached Winfrey shortly after midnight as he was striking Caffey in the yard. The teen reportedly then stabbed him in the neck. Winfrey was pronounced dead at Baptist Health Medical Center.

"[The teen] was crying and appeared to be nervous," a responding police officer wrote in the report. "[She] excitedly uttered 'I didn't mean to do it, I was just trying to scare him so he could stop hitting momma.'"

The incident remains under investigation and no arrests have been made. Police say the case will ultimately be forwarded to the prosecutor's office to determine whether charges will be filed.

There were no signs of the incident outside the home later Thursday morning. No police tape or vehicles were present around 10:30 a.m. A man who answered the door and identified himself as a family member declined to comment, saying he had no information about what happened.
