Another petition for a writ of mandamus to require Secretary of State Earle W. Hodges to certify to the election commissioners the initiating of a local act to permit the playing of baseball upon any day of the week within the corporate limits of the city of Little Rock, was filed in Second Division of the Circuit Court yesterday. The petitioners allege that the number of electors of the city whose signatures were properly attached to the petition far exceeded the minimum proportion required by law for the submission of the proposed act to be voted upon by the people of Little Rock under the initiative and referendum laws of the state.

Ash and black smoke are leaking from North Little Rock’s garbage incinerator into a nearby residential area even though city records indicated officials have been aware of the problem for the past three years. The incinerator, located at Atkinson and Short streets, has been leaking ash from its ash collection system, according to a Pollution Control and Ecology air division inspection report dated May 4. Officials associated with the incinerator either claim no problems exist or blame other pollution sources.

Little Rock’s Main Street is edging closer to becoming an entertainment strip thanks to the Stephens family. The prominent Arkansas family recently offered a parcel of Main Street land as a possible new home for the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, which has outgrown its digs a few blocks south on Main. The land gift is contingent on the Rep raising enough money to build a new theater, although theater officials have yet to establish how much money they will need.
