Cotton, Ellington get nods for US House

Jeffress, Hurst advance to runoff

With over 80 percent of state precincts reporting, state prosecutor Scott Ellington led the Democratic primary for U.S. House in the 1st District, according to unofficial numbers at midnight.

Ellington had 50 percent for the vote, followed by Clark Hall with 38 and Gary Latanich with 12.

In the 4th District Democratic primary, Gene Jeffress led with 40 percent of the vote followed closely by Q. Byrum Hurst at 36 percent, which will advance the two to a runoff. DC Morrison held 24 percent of the vote.

Tom Cotton led the 4th District Republican race with 56 percent of the vote to Beth Anne Rankin's 38 percent. John Cowart was a distant third with 6 percent.

Cotton arrived at his watch party about 8:30 p.m., shaking hands with supporters and going over the vote totals counted so far. He said his campaign was monitoring totals from the Associated Press and the Secretary of State.

"It's still early," Cotton said as he made his way through the room. "But it looks promising." Cotton took the stage shortly after 11 p.m. to officially announce his victory, immediately after Rankin's concession speech in Magnolia.
