Tryouts, poets, music camps

— Elsewhere in entertainment and the arts this week: Hairspray auditions

The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St., Pine Bluff, will hold auditions at 6:30 p.m. May 29-30 for its production of the musical Hairspray (music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the John Waters film).

The show is based on Pine Bluff native Buddy Deane’s Baltimore television show that featured high school students dancing to pop tunes of the day.

Auditioners should prepare a one- to two-minute vocal selection; there will be a brief dance audition with choreography that will be taught on site, and for which they should wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Director Philip McGuire’s ensemble cast will have parts for actors white, black, male and female in an age range of teenage to adult. Mark Binns will be the musical director.

No experience is necessary. The center is also seeking technical volunteers for costuming, set building, makeup, hairdressing and wigs and front of house activities.

Production dates are July 25-29. Call (870) 536-3375 or visit ArtsScienceCenter.org.
