Europe’s leaders seek ways to boost growth

— The leaders of the 27 countries that make up the European Union are meeting in Brussels to try to keep the debt crisis on the continent from spiraling out of control.

Leaders at the summit Wednesday are expected to tread a fine line between talking about ways to promote growth and sticking to commitments to balancing budgets.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said his country can’t continue much longer with its current high borrowing rates. He urged a joint European response to keep the region’s debt problems from getting worse.

Rajoy and newly elected French President Francois Hollande both stressed their commitment to keeping Greece in the eurozone despite political turmoil there as political leaders have been unable to form a ruling coalition.
