Incumbent sheriffs win primaries in 2 counties

— Incumbent Democratic sheriffs in Johnson and Scott counties have won in Tuesday’s primary, according to unofficial election results.

Johnson County Sheriff Jimmy Dorney was leading against challenger Charles “Buddy” Beavers. If he wins when the tally is certified, Dorney will remain sheriff another term.

No Republican filed to run for sheriff in the November election.

Complete but unofficial results were: Jimmy Dorney . . . . . .1,891 Charles Beavers . . . . . 1,114

Dorney was not available for comment.

For Scott County Sheriff Cody Carpenter, however, the primary race was the first hurdle in his bid for re-election. In the fall, Carpenter will face Republican Jimmy Yandell, who ran unopposed in the primary.

Partial and unofficial results were: Cody Carpenter . . . . . 690 Tom Garrison . . . . . . . . 377

The number of precincts reporting in Scott County was not available.

Carpenter had described voter support during the Democratic primary as a blessing.

“We try to do the very best job for Scott County,” Carpenter said. “I’m deeply humbled by the support that the county’s given me.”

Dorney, 45, began his duties as Johnson County sheriff in 2006. The primary win means he will remain sheriff for a fourth two-year term.
