— Highway officials say delays are expected next Wednesday when crews make significant changes to the southbound lanes of Interstate 430 at Interstate 630, where a major interchange project is under way.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department said crews will work beginning at 9 a.m. May 30 to shift the southbound lanes between Markham Street and I-630. One to two of the three southbound lanes will be shut down for 18 to 21 hours, the agency said, adding northbound lanes won't be affected.

“Safety is always the number one concern for both the workers and the motorists,” highway director Scott Bennett said in a news release. “We urge motorists that use southbound I-430 near the interchange to find another route and just stay away on May 30 so workers can transition the work area quicker and safer.”

The lanes are shifting so work can begin on the next phase of construction, which will last roughly a month. Three southbound lanes will remain, but the widths will be reduced and the speed will be 40 mph through the area.

The $150 million interchange project is slated to be complete in 2014.
