Hooks whip Travs

— Brandon Barnes hit a three-run home run as part of a five-run first inning to lead the Corpus Christi Hooks to a 9-5 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Wednesday night at Whataburger Field.

The loss snapped the Travs’ three-game winning streak.

Barnes finished 3 for 4 as the Hooks roughed up Travelers starter Orangel Arenas.

Arenas (2-4) allowed 9 runs on 12 hits in 5 innings as he saw his ERA increase from 3.59 to 4.78. He struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.

The Hooks added three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth for a 9-1 lead. But Arkansas scored four runs in the ninth as Roberto Lopez hit an RBI single, Casey Haerther scored home on an error by Jose Martinez, and Lopez and Adam Heeter scored on wild pitches by reliever Jose Zeid.

Darwin Perez hit an RBI single for the Travs. Haerther and Lopez each had two hits for Arkansas.

Hooks starter Jake Buchanan (2-3) pitched 8 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs, 3 earned, on 8 hits while striking 4 and walking 1.
