School district’s open meetings to include board rezoning options, public input

— The Pulaski County Special School District will hold two more public meetings, scheduled per legislation to rezone the school district’s population as measured by the most recent (2010) U.S. census, and to take any actions required by law regarding board zoning, said Deborah Roush, the district’s executive director of communications.

No later than June 8, every school district must submit a report to the Arkansas Department of Education documenting the district’s compliance with this requirement, she said.

The open-forum meetings will be held at 6 p.m. today at Maumelle High School, 100 Victory Lane in Maumelle; and at 6 p.m. Tuesdayat Jacksonville High School, 2400 Linda Lane in Jacksonville.

Roush said if zone populations are no longer substantially equal, the district’s zones must be redrawn so the population differences between the zones do not exceed those allowed by the “one person-one vote” principle.

That is, zones must be drawn so as to be substantially equal in voting-age population.

Roush said the district will use the meetings to explain the requirements every school district must meet to reflectthe results of the 2010 U.S. census and what the possible new zones would look like, and to seek public input.
