LR driver jailed after fatal crash

4-car accident kills 1, injures 3

— A driver involved in a fatal four-vehicle crash on Cantrell Road on Wednesday afternoon was being held at the Pulaski County jail Thursday in lieu of $2 million bond on a gun charge.

At 2:38 p.m., officers responded to a crash in the 19000 block of Cantrell Road and found four vehicles scattered across the roadway.

Little Rock police spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said on Wednesday that a Chrysler 300 traveling west on Cantrell Road crossed the centerline and struck a Buick LeSabre traveling in the opposite direction head-on.

A Honda CRV traveling west attempted to avoid the crash, but struck the vehicles and ended up in a ditch on the south side of the roadway, a crash report states.

The driver of a GMC Sierra traveling east told police he tried to avoid the crash and was struck by the Buick.

The driver of the Honda, Maria Rosario, 40, of Adona was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rosario’s passenger, Cindy Romero, 20, of Adona was taken to UAMS Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the Buick, Charles Crockett, 79, of Little Rock was taken to UAMS Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

Crockett’s passenger, Ryleigh Crockett, 2, of North Little Rock was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the GMC, Augustus Shuster, 47, of Sherwood, was not injured.

Officers spoke with Demeteius Brown, the driver of the Chrysler 300 involved in the crash, who “appeared unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech,” a crash report states.

Officers arrested Brown, 29, of Lake Charles, La., and found a 9mm Beretta pistol on him. Brown, who was not injured in the crash, was charged with carrying a weapon, but officers also obtained a warrant to draw a blood sample, the report states.

Police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings said the results of a blood draw can take up to 60 days to come back, but that additional charges were expected by early next week. He said the department is working with the prosecutor’s office to determine the other charges.
