CAIRO, Egypt — Egyptian presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq has paid tribute to the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak and vowed not to try and "recreate" the old regime.
Shafiq, the last prime minister to serve under Mubarak, will face Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in a runoff on June 16-17.
The two were the top vote-getters after a two-day election on Wednesday and Thursday which none of the 13 candidates could win outright.
Addressing a news conference Saturday, Shafiq appeared to be trying to cast off his image as an anti-revolution candidate who spoke disparagingly about the youth groups that engineered the anti-Mubarak uprising.
A former air force commander, Shafiq was booted out of office by a wave of street protests shortly after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011.
