sells 25,000 shares

Paul Schroeder Jr., vice president and general counsel of Dillard’s Inc., netted about $1.1 million Friday through exercise of a derivative security, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to the filing, Schroeder acquired 25,000 shares of the company’s stock at $25.74 a share. He then sold 25,000 shares at $70 a share.

After the transaction, the filing shows, Schroeder directly owned 10,150 shares of Dillard’s stock, plus an additional 835 shares in a retirement plan.

Dillard’s stock closed Friday at $69.49, down 32 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has traded between $38.99 and $72.46 in the past year. JBU business teams win Las Vegas honors

A team from John Brown University in Siloam Springs won the undergraduate division of the Donald W. Reynolds Tri-State business plan competition this week in Las Vegas.

The winning team was Hydrovate, a business that provides innovative hydration solutions for livestock. The team members, who received a total of $30,000, were Amanda Abramovitz, Tina Funk, Josh Garrett and Rolando Ochoa.

Another JBU team, Simpler Solutions, finished second and won $20,000. Simpler Solutions provides an efficient way for customers to sample paint. Team members were Jamison Hofer, Brandon Knight and Shantelle Overby. Eva Fast, adviser for both JBU teams, won $7,000.

It was the second year in a row that JBU swept the undergraduate competition.

In the competition in Little Rock last month, Simpler Solutions won and Hydrovate was second.

Two teams from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas won first and second place in the graduate competition.

Acxiom gains 5.2%, but index slips 0.94

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, dropped 0.94 to 223.91 on Friday.

Nine stocks advanced, six declined and one was unchanged.

Acxiom gained 5.2 percent on almost three times its average volume.

America’s Car-Mart lost 8.2 percent on about three times more trading than average.

For the week, 10 stocks rose and six fell.

J.B. Hunt Services climbed 7.8 percent for the week.

USA Truck slid 9.9 percent for the week.

Volume on Friday was 21.3 million shares, compared with average daily volume of 34.3 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
