Hamilton lifts game-ending home run in 13th

— Josh Hamilton hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 13th inning, lifting the Texas Rangers to an 8-7 victory over the Toronto Blue jays.

Toronto had taken a 7-5 lead in the top half, but Elvis Andrus doubled in a run off Ryota Igarashi to start the comeback. Hamilton’s third gameending home run came off Jason Frasor (0-1) and was his 20th home run of the year.

Ian Kinsler walked to start the inning - the fifth consecutive inning that the Rangers got their leadoff batter on base - and Andrus doubled. Frasor relieved and gave up the home run.

In the top of the 13th, Omar Vizquel hit an RBI single for Torontoand later scored after Nelson Cruz misplayed a fly ball by Yunel Escobar with two outs. Vizquel went 3 for 6 with his first two RBI of the season.

The Rangers left a runner stranded at third base in the seventh, ninth, 10th and 11th innings, and before Hamilton’s hit, Texas was 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

Yoshinori Tateyama (1-0), the seventh Rangers pitcher, got one out for the victory.

Texas relievers Mike Adams, Joe Nathan, Koji Uehara and Robbie Ross combined to retire 14 in a row starting with the final out of the seventh until Ross walked Colby Rasmus with one out in the 12th. The Rangers got out of that inning even after Rasmus made it to third on Edwin Encarnacion’s single with two outs when J.P. Arencibia grounded out to Ross. Then in the 13th, Ross gave up a single to Brett Lawrie with one out,leading the way for Vizquel’s RBI.

ROYALS 4, ORIOLES 3 Eric Hosmer singled in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning, Billy Butler homered and visiting Kansas City rallied to beat Baltimore. Hosmer went 3 for 4 with two RBI tohelp the Royals make up a three-run deficit.

WHITE SOX 14, INDIANS 7 Paul Konerko had four hits, Dayan Viciedo homered in his third consecutive game, and host Chicago pounded Derek Lowe and Cleveland.

YANKEES 9, ATHLETICS 2 Mark Teixeira hit two home runs among his career high-tying four hits to back CC Sabathia’s sixth victory of the year, and visiting New York beat Oakland.

ANGELS 5, MARINERS 3 Albert Pujols hit a home run in his third consecutive game and pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo came through with a grand slam in the sixth inning to give visiting Los Angeles a victory over Seattle.

RED SOX 3, RAYS 2 Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a pinch-hit, two-run home run off Fernando Rodney (2-1) with one out in the ninth inning to lift host Boston over Tampa Bay.

National League MARLINS 5, GIANTS 3 Mark Buehrle (5-4) pitched into the eighth inning and host Miami moved within a victory of tying the team record for the most in a month with a victory over San Francisco. Giancarlo Stanton hit two doublesand scored twice while Logan Morrison drove in two runs for the Marlins. Miami is a major league-best 18-7 in May. The Marlins went 19-10 in August 1997.

METS 9, PADRES 0 Johan Santana pitched a four-hitter for his first shutout since 2010 and host New York backed him with three home runs in a victory over San Diego.

NATIONALS 8, BRAVES 4 Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help visiting Washington beat Atlanta.

PHILLIES 4, CARDINALS 0 Kyle Kendrick threw a seven-hitter for his first career shutout, winning his first game of the season and putting visiting Philadelphia on the verge of their first four-game sweep in St. Louis in 26 years.

PIRATES 3, CUBS 2 Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis (2-4) with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and host Pittsburgh sent Chicago to its 11th consecutive loss.

REDS 10, ROCKIES 3 Chris Heisey gave host Cincinnati the lead with his first home run of the season, and four relievers made it stand up as the Reds overcame a poor start by Mike Leake for a victory over Colorado.
