— D.C. gardener to give plant tips

Mike Lawn, former White House executive groundskeeper, will present gardening tips at North Little Rock’s Laman Library on Saturday, June 2, in conjunction with an exhibit on the White House Garden.

Lawn’s presentation is titled “Making Your Mansion Bloom - Tips from the White House to the Backyard.” The free program will begin at 10 a.m. at the library’s Lecture Hall, 2801 Orange St., North Little Rock.

The White House Garden exhibit, on display now, will run through July 21. The exhibit was organized by the White House Historical Association through the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

The exhibit traces the development and history of the gardens and grounds. The 18-acre ensemble of formal gardens, secluded natural retreats and expansive park land has been shaped by presidents and first ladies, as well as landscape designers and generations of gardeners and horticulturists.

The exhibit features reproductions of archival materials and historic and contemporary photographs from the National Archives and Records Administration, Library of Congress, and other sources focused on the presidents and their families, White House gardeners and the White House grounds.

NLR gives 5 grants for local gardens

North Little Rock awarded $24,100 in community garden grants last week to five different projects, part of the city’s effort to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables across the city.

The grants were: $5,500 each to Eighth Street Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church and The Field Community Garden; $4,300 to Argenta Vegetable Garden; and, $3,300 to Heritage/Bowker House.

The five projects bring the number of community gardens in the city to 13, 12 within the last year. New or expanding community gardens and urban farms within the city limits are eligible to apply for the city-funded grants.

A second round of garden grants will be awarded this fall. Interested individuals or groups can contact Bernadette Gunn Rhodes, at the city’s Fit 2 Live office, 975-8777 or by email brhodes@northlittlerock.ar.gov.
