Arkansas achievers

— Breast Care, a program of the Arkansas Department of Health, has announced the winners of the 2012 Josetta Wilkins Awards, which honor outstanding work in breast cancer awareness, education and prevention: Danielle Smith of Rose Bud is the daughter of Betty Jane “BJ” McAfee Smith, who died of breast cancer in 2005. Danielle created BJ’s Angels, a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure team, and Roping for the Cure, a fundraising event, as tributes to her mother.

Ella Anderson of Little Rock is a 12-year breast-cancer survivor. She is a Witness Role Model and a lay health adviser with The Witness Project and has been a captain of a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure team for about a decade. She is president of the Mission Society at her church, where she participates in Baptist Health and St. Vincent Health System’s program Look Good,Feel Better by sewing caps and pillows for breast cancer patients.

Elliott West, the Alumni Distinguished Professor of History and faculty member in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, has received a 2012 Faculty Achievement Award from the Southeastern Conference. The award honors one professor from each SEC university with an outstanding record in teaching and scholarship who serves as a role model for other faculty members and students. Winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium and become their university’s nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award.

The following students have received scholarships to attend Hendrix College beginning in fall 2012: Hannah Daniel, a senior at Little Rock Christian Academy, has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Artistic Creativity.

Nini Hoang, a senior at Little Rock Central High School, has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Artistic Creativity.

Daniel Imbro, a senior at Little Rock Central High School, has received an academic scholarship, an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development, and a Miller Center Service Scholarship.

Felicia Headley of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Artistic Creativity. She is the daughter of Mark and Debbie Headley and is a senior at Little Rock Central High School.

Kayla Patton of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development. She is the daughter of Ron and Diann Patton and is a senior at Little Rock Central High School.

Hannah Shelton of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Artistic Creativity. She is the daughter of Rick and Dana Shelton and is a senior at LISA Academy.

Jonathan Spradley of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development. He is the son of Mark and Laura Spradley and is a senior at Little Rock Central High School.

Jared Stone of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development. He is the son of James and Angie Stone and is a senior at Robinson High School.

Michael McMurray of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development. He is the son of Shawn and Ginny McMurray and is a senior at Little Rock Central High School.

Connor Newton of Little Rock has received an academic scholarship and an Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development. He is the son of Bruce and Valerie Newton and is a senior at Little Rock Central High School.

Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to those for their achievements.

Civilian and military achievements are accepted.
