— 100 YEARS AGO May 30, 1912 PINE BLUFF - Through an increased membership, with funds already in hand from the sale of Red Cross Christmas stamps, and with financial aid from the county and city, the Jefferson County Anti-Tuberculosis Society hopes to establish a free clinic and laboratory in this city within the next few months. Plans for the temporary hospital were outlined at a meeting of a special committee from the society.

50 YEARS AGO May 30, 1962 FORT SMITH - The 974 students in Fort Smith junior high schools stood for a minute’s silent tribute today to the 1,464 unknown soldiers buried in the Fort Smith National Cemetery. A card was handed each child by the Amvets organization. It read: “I am anunknown soldier. ... May I thank you for remembering me on this Memorial Day. Through the years to come, I wish you and our beloved nation to have the freedom and peace which so many of us fought for in the past.” 25 YEARS AGO May 30, 1987 BRYANT - Nearly 40 high school students participating in a junior class parade Friday received tickets for disobeying the police chief’s mandate that a parade for juniors would not be allowed this year. Students who were driving cars, their passengers, and other students who had congregated at a city park were issued $125.75 citations for violating Arkansas statute 75-422 - obedience to police officers. James Hipps, Bryant chief of police, said Friday that his directive to the high school principal disallowing the junior-class parade was issued because of a growing number of enrolled students and the traffic problems it caused in Bryant, which has a population of approximately 3,000.

The Salvation Army will close its adult rehabilitation center and consolidate its five Little Rock thrift stores in the coming months because of lack of money, officials said Wednesday. The center employs about 30 people, Maj. Newton Brown said. He said the center is cutting hours and shifting some employees to the thrift store operation, where they will pick up or process donations. A handful of employees at the rehabilitation center will be let go, he said.
