UCA to announce new women's basketball coach

The University of Central Arkansas has called a 3 p.m. news conference Thursday to announce its new women’s head basketball coach, the school said in a release.

Sources told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that UCA Athletic Director Brad Teague interviewed Delta State women’s Coach Sandra Rushing Wednesday and Sugar Bears associate head coach Tony Kemper on Tuesday.

When contacted by the Democrat-Gazette Wednesday, Teague said that he could not comment. Rushing could not be reached for comment.

Rushing has been at Delta State for ten seasons, compiling a 254-57 record and has won five Gulf South Conference championships. She led the Lady Statesmen to six consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. Before arriving at Delta State, Rushing was at Texas-El Paso (1990-2001) and Henderson State (2001-2002).

Kemper was former UCA Coach Matt Daniel’s lead assistant for two seasons (2010-2012) and served on Rand Chappell’s men’s basketball staff at the school in 2006-2010.

Daniel was introduced as the new head coach at Marshall University on Tuesday after four seasons in which he led the Sugar Bears to three consecutive 21-win seasons and a Southland Conference regular-season title last season. Daniel, from Jonesboro, finished 72-50 at UCA.

The news conference will be held in the Hall of Fame room at Estes Stadium in Conway. The public is invited to attend.
