Conway to receive almost $5.8M in airport funding

— Officials say the city of Conway will receive almost $5.8 million in federal funding to build a new airport.

U.S. Sens. Mark Pryor and John Boozman made the announcement this week, along with Congressman Tim Griffin. Pryor says Conway’s current airport isn’t safe — noting that two people were killed in 2007 when a plane crashed into a house near the airport.

The airport is located between a residential neighborhood and Interstate 40.

The Log Cabin Democrat reports that officials hope to build an airport by 2014 at the Lollie Bottoms site west of Conway.

Pryor says Faulkner County also will benefit from a new airport because the area serves as a hub for companies that are drilling for natural gas in the Fayetteville Shale.
