— 100 YEARS AGO May 31, 1912 Governor Donaghey, by proclamation, yesterday declared the incorporated town of Springdale raised to a city of the second class. This was following the action of the Board of Municipal Incorporations, which on Wednesday investigated the reports of the citizens that the population exceeded 2,000 and declared the city to be raised to a city of the second class. W.G. Ownsby is mayor of Springdale, and the population is 2,058.

50 YEARS AGO May 31, 1962

Negro pride instead of freedom rides was the suggest of a Chicago Negro minister who was commencement speaker for Arkansas Baptist College here yesterday. Dr. Joseph H. Jackson, president of the National Baptist Convention Inc., told 23 graduating students of the college and about 500 guests that Negroes must “accept who you are” and that the freedom rides, both North and South, represent the “lazy” approach to solution of social problems.

On July 20, when the state’s new laws requiring all Arkansas motor vehicle drivers to carry automobile liability insurance go into effect, drivers with bad driving records will pay as much as double the amount good drivers pay for the same coverage, according to industry and legislative sources. Governor Bill Clinton in April signed into law three acts that make motor vehicle liability insurance mandatory for Arkansas drivers.

10 YEARS AGO May 31, 2002 HIGHFILL - A security technician testing screening equipment at the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport early Thursday mistakenly left behind a fake bomb, prompting the early morning evacuation of hundreds of travelers.The airport was closed for an hour after security screeners discovered the unattended briefcase, Airport Director Kelly Johnson said. Johnson said she was the first to recognize it as a device a technician used Wednesday night and early Thursday to test screening equipment at airport security checkpoints.
