Moore concedes, GOP controls Arkansas House for first time since 1874

— Republicans will control the Arkansas House next year after taking a majority of seats for the first time since Reconstruction.

According to The Associated Press, Sue Scott in Benton County has won the State House 95 seat, giving the GOP 51 of the House’s 100 seats. Democrats have 48 seats and the Green Party has one.

Mark Moore, Scott's independent candidate, confirmed at about 4:40 p.m. Thursday that he had conceded the race.

All three of Benton County's paper ballot machines broke after Tuesday's election, leaving uncertainty about the outcome of many races.

Robbyn Tumey, a Benton County election commissioner, told NWA Media at about 3 p.m. that officials were still counting votes and would likely not have a final count until tomorrow.

Republicans won the state Senate, too, but the GOP doesn’t have the three-fourths majority needed to pass appropriations bills.

The last time Republicans held a majority in the state House was prior to the 1874 elections.

The results in 1874 will probably be better than what comes out of this hodge-podge.

There is a reason Arkansans elected Republicans to a majority - they are fed up with the Left-ward move of our state. Our taxes continue to rise, and we are headed towards our own fiscal cliff with Beebe's rabid support of the massive expansion of Medicaid/ObamaScare.

I'm just disgusted with Pulaski County, who continues to vote in greater numbers for the same Liberal politicians and positions that are the cause of our economic troubles.

Medicaid expansion is dead on arrival...the Arkansas Leg needs to move on to cutting taxes, and reducing the size of government...also, time to rein in both the Highway Dept and Game and Fish...

Batt, in my opinion, Huckabee and Beebe both have done a pretty good job. Arkansas is in far better shape than most states. However, in all of this partisan bickering, neither side will give credit to the other.

MY QUESTION IS WHY DID WE GIVE THE HWY DEPT A TAX INCREASE WHEN WE JUST DID THAT IN THE LAST ELECTION? SOMEWHERE THE TAXING HAS GOT TO STOP AND THE SPENDING AS WELL.

Arkansas has a balanced budget. The reason Arkansas is a poor state is because the schools are bad. It doesn't matter if you have Republicans or Democrats in the state legislature if the schools are no good. The schools need computers for every student in middle school and above, smaller class sizes, decent principals with the ability to fire bad teachers subject to a review panel made up of half teachers and half principals, a better curriculum imported from better school districts, and some new, young teachers and administrators from more successful school districts. If kids cannot read and write well and are deficient in math and science and computer skills, they are going to have to compete for low paying jobs as shoe salesmen at JC Penneys. It is a national disgrace that so many doctors, medical technicians, and IT people have to be imported from India and China because we don't have enough Americans who are qualified to perform the work. Go over to your local hospital and see how many foreigners and out-of-staters have been imported to work because there are not enough educated Arkies to do the job. People who have kids in school need to get in the faces of their state legislators, the governor, and the school board officials and demand to know why the schools are rundown and do not have sufficient computer equipment and classes. I read the ADG enough to know that the truant officers are not doing their jobs, and that young hoodlums are committing crimes all across Little Rock. Throw the kids in juvenile hall and the parents in jail if the kids suffer from neglect or are not in school. The reason Arkansas is poor has nothing to do with liberalism. Maryland, Massachusetts, and Connecticut are full of liberals whose kids are fine and working very hard in fine schools. Economic success depends on good schools and hard work. It is not a political state of mind.

Populist - Bless your heart. You go on these silly rants about education without a clue of reality. FYI - Arkansas has a balanced budget because BY LAW it has no other choice. Arkansas students lag in educational achievement NOT because of a lack of computers, good teachers, or air-conditioned buildings but because liberal social policies have created a dependence mentality where too many parents see more benefit in receiving a government check than receiving a quality education. Liberal policies, by the way, enacted and facilited by demorats at the state and federal levels of government. The reason Arkansas is poor has EVERYTHING to do with liberalism.

Thank God we still have Gov. Bebee. Else before long we could be like Jindal country to the south where boil water orders are issued daily, chemical spills and explosions are regular occurrences and public schools and hospitals have been eviscerated.
