Ex-Harlem Globetrotter returns to Arkansas Legislature

— A former Harlem Globetrotter who became the second Green Party candidate to be elected to the Arkansas Legislature could play an important role in this coming legislative session.

Both Democrats and Republicans said they’ve already reached out to work with Rep.-elect Fred Smith.

Smith was elected Tuesday after a judge ordered no votes be counted for his opponent — who has pleaded guilty to a federal election fraud charge.

Smith resigned from the House last year after a judge found him guilty of felony theft of property that had been delivered by mistake.

He filed paperwork to run as a Democrat again in March, but the party sued to keep him off the ballot.

A judge later dismissed the theft case and Smith found support in the Green Party.
