Veterans Day Closing

Saxophone Quartet Concert

ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist University will present the Arkansas Saxophone Quartet at 7:30 p.m. in the W. Francis McBeth Recital Hall at the Mabee Fine Arts Center. The event, sponsored by the Ouachita Division of Music, is free and open to the public. The quartet has performed throughout the U.S., as well as at the World Saxophone Conference in St. Andrews, Scotland. Holiday Closings

HOT SPRINGS — City offices, except public safety and the airport, will be closed Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day. Sanitation residential waste collection and Earth Angel recycling collection will not run Monday. These services will run one day behind schedule, starting Tuesday. Commercial, downtown and roll-off sanitation services will occur as scheduled. The office will be closed, and all other sanitation services will be suspended. Hot Springs Intracity Transit buses and Americans With Disabilities Act paratransit vans will operate on their normal schedules Monday, but the offices will be closed. Paratransit cancellations can still be made by voice mail at (501) 321-6625. The city’s compost facility will be closed.

Ribbon-Cutting

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Property Owners’ Association Recreation Department will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. for the new Balboa Spillway Trail Extension at Promesa Drive. The extension is at the intersection of Promesa and Ponce de Leon drives and continues south to connect with the Balboa Spillway Trail. Planetarium Presentation

ARKADELPHIA — The planetarium at Henderson State University’s Reynolds Science Center will present Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity at 7 p.m. The program will include visualizations of the formation of the early universe, star birth and death, the collision of giant galaxies, and a simulated flight to a super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The shows are open to the public. Admission is $3 per person, or $1 with a student ID. Extreme darkness is important to the effects of the shows; therefore, late arrivals will not be admitted. Stepping Up for Ouachita

ARKADELPHIA — The third annual Stepping Up for Ouachita luncheon will be held at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock. This year’s honoree, Molly (Goforth) Kircher, is a 1964 cum laude graduate of Ouachita Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. This year’s luncheon will feature a live decorating demonstration by Providence Ltd. Design. Event registration and the opening of the gallery will begin at 11 a.m., and luncheon doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $100 each for individuals and $1,000 for a table of eight. Holidays at Hurricane

BRYANT — The fourth annual Holidays at Hurricane will be held Friday and Saturday at Hurricane Creek Elementary School in Benton. This community event presents more than 60 vendors from across central Arkansas. A Ladies Night Out will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, and the doors will be open to everyone from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Professional photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event is sponsored by the Hurricane Creek PTO, and proceeds will be used to purchase computers and playground equipment, as well as provide activities for students. Admission is $3 for adults. 5K/1K Event

BRYANT — Imagination Library of Saline County will hold its third annual 5K/1K event at Bishop Park. The 5K will start at 9 a.m., followed by the 1K. There will be “grinches,” who will attempt to grab participants’ flags on the 5K course. For the 1K, participants will receive a sticker for each “grinch” they catch. HOT SPRINGS — The Junior Auxiliary of Hot Springs will hold Bunko Bash 2012 at Coco Beverage in Hot Springs. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with bunko starting at 7 p.m. The event will include a silent auction, prize giveaways, and food and beverages. The annual fundraiser supports the Junior Auxiliary’s service projects that support Garland County kids. Student Salon Exhibit

ARKADELPHIA — The Henderson State University Visual Art Department will present a student salon exhibit at the Arkadelphia Arts Center through Nov. 24. VFW Bingo

BENTON — Bingo is held at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday and at 1 p.m. every Saturday at Benton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2256. Members and guests are welcome but must be at least 21 years old. There is no charge for admission, and the kitchen will serve burgers, fries, taco salads and other dishes.

Geocaching

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Geocaching, an outdoor game in which a GPS device is used for a scavenger hunt, is available in Hot Springs Village. Participants will pick up a geocaching flyer and gate pass at the Hot Springs Village Visitor Center; use a handheld GPS device to hunt for seven interesting places in Hot Springs Village; look for a container that may be partially hidden and collect an information card tucked inside; and bring all seven cards to the visitor center to be entered in a monthly drawing for a prize until March 1. Ham and Turkey Smoking

MALVERN — St. Paul United Methodist Men in Malvern at East Mill and Cherry Lane will smoke 14- to 16-pound Petit Jean hams and 7- to 9-pound turkey breasts for Thanksgiving on Nov. 20 and 21. Whole hams are $50, and half hams $28. Turkey breasts are $45 whole and $25 for a half. Pickup time will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 20 and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 21. Holiday Concert

BRYANT — Sweet Tunes’ Creations will present its first annual holiday concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 1, featuring David Suits and Denaz Suits. They will perform traditional holiday favorites, as well as an original instrumental song, at the Center of Bryant in the Purple Room upstairs. The event is open to the public, and with each ticket purchase, Sweet Tunes’ Creations will donate $1 to the Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that helps provide programs, services and treatment for sick and injured children. Starlight Gala

A Christmas Carol

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The traditional, nonmusical adaptation by Romulus Linney of Charles Dickens’ timeless holiday story A Christmas Carol will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Woodlands Auditorium. The Hot Springs Village Players production will use special lighting and other effects to reveal the dramatic transformation of “Mr. Humbug” on the night before Christmas.
