— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 11, 1912

VAN BUREN - Street cars are now running into Van Buren, much to the satisfaction of the citizens of this city who have wanted trolley cars in Van Buren so long. The first car was run over the new Jefferson street viaduct over the Iron Mountain tracks, just north of the free bridge a little before noon Saturday morning.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 11, 1962

A three-day tour of state institutions apprised members of the Arkansas Legislative Council of two facts: 1. More space and facilities are needed to care for the mentally retarded persons, especially children. 2. New methods of treatment continue to lighten the patient load at the Booneville Sanatorium, while the demand for space for Negro tubercular patients at McRae Sanatorium runs high. The three-day tour began Wednesday. It ended late Friday after the legislators, accompanied by Little Rock reporters, had traveled more than 600 miles by automobile. The object was for the legislators to acquaint themselves with problems at the institutions.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 11, 1987

Financial records concerning the faltering Head Start program were among items taken over the weekend from the offices of the Urban League of Arkansas Inc. The burglary, reported to Little Rock police Monday, occurred during the weekend as the Arkansas Democrat began publication of a series of stories detailing problems with the administration of the Head Start program. The police reported that the point of entry was unknown and a key apparently was used to enter the offices at 2200 Main St. in Little Rock.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 11, 2002

BLYTHEVILLE - The merger of a publicly funded trade school and a community college in Mississippi County will help provide better work training for a county with the state’s highest unemployment rate, administrators at both institutions claim. Representatives of the Cotton Boll Technical Institute in Burdette want to merge with the Mississippi County Community College in Blytheville and consolidate services. Boards of both will meet within a few weeks and are expected to recommend the merger.
