LITTLE ROCK An attempted bank robbery in west Little Rock left one person shot and at least one suspect at-large Monday afternoon.
Little Rock Police Department spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said it happened about 1:35 p.m. at the Arvest branch located at 16501 Chenal Parkway.
Davis said the would-be robber shot the victim in the leg as he fled from the bank. It is not clear if he actually got in the bank or escaped with any money.
The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to a local hospital. Davis had no information on his condition, but a witness at the scene said he didn't believe the man's injuries were life-threatening.
The shooter then fled to a nearby gas station, where a bystander opened fire on the man with his own weapon, Davis said. Authorities do not believe the man was hit.
After being shot at, the would-be robber then fled in a white vehicle. Davis said it was recovered a short time later by police at an apartment complex in the 15000 block of Chenal, but no suspects have been arrested.
Stephen Bailey said he was filling up at the gas station when he heard a loud boom from one of the shots and then saw the suspect vehicle driving off in a hurry.
"At that point then we heard people screaming and a guy laying on the ground at the Arvest bank had gotten shot in the leg," Bailey said. "... It was crazy. Midday like this, you would never expect to see a robbery and the banks aren't even supposed to be open today. It was a scary thing."
Witnesses provided conflicting information about the suspect's description and the number of suspects, Davis said, noting it's possible there were two men involved in the attempted robbery.
Davis said the armed bystander was being interviewed by police. She said contacting police and being a "good witness" is a better option for bystanders as opposed to "engaging in the violence themselves."
"It could have been more severe than what it is," Davis said. "I believe the bystander did strike another vehicle. But the potential for someone else getting injured is there."

Talk about brazen! Not only armed robbery but shooting someone. I hope they bystander was not nailed with any charges for trying to assist in the apprehension of this person. Too bad he missed!

Simply not enough cops on the streets for a town of this size and violence.

I heard the armed bystander is a doctor. Let's start a reward fund.

Harley, who often posts here, lives in west Little Rock and is armed and looking to "get involved." Hmmm.

I don't care if it's Harley or not, whoever it was needs to go to the range and practice on hitting a moving target

Why don't we just encourage birth control to those who should not be parents, enforce child neglect laws, and have quality schools and childrens homes? Then, there would not be so many robbers running around.

I'm thankful this idiot didn't injure someone with his wreckless shooting. It could have been someone's child or grandchild in the vehicle hit by his random and off-target shooting. His life does not appear to have been in danger and what if the person he thought was a robber was really another citizen who was pursuing the real criminals and now they are into a wild west shoot-out in the middle of the public parking lot?? We are asking for trouble with stuff like this and I pray no innocent people get hurt or killed by some of these so called "hero's"

Hey Populist - "Why don't we just encourage birth control to those who should not be parents.....have quality schools.......? Then, there would not be so many robbers running around?" Many of us did as you preach (but do not practice) by voting against BH Obama and liberal social policies last week. Liberal social policies supported by politicians like BH Obama encourage the attainment of a government check over a quality education. Policies that penalize marriage and encourage out-of-wedlock births. Again, you are talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Even though he missed, I believe he may have prevented the criminal from shooting someone else.

"gun control" means hitting your target.. I do hope the armed bystander was SURE who needed shooting and it appears he needs some range lessons.
His own life does not have to be in danger to use deadly force. If that guy believed soemone else was in direct danger he was still justified in pulling the trigger. As an armed citizen myself I know what training we go through both tactical and legal.

Oh, he did. He shot the guy in the leg as he left the bank. Any other shooting that you may be referring to, possibly kept the idiot from shooting anyone else.

nonsheeple, to get a conceal and carry permit in Arkansas, you have to take a one day class. What tactical training are you referring to? just curious.

Packman,
When the Republicans try to encourage insurance companies to not cover contraception, the Republicans are the ones who are increasing unwanted pregnancies. The high wage earners in this country mostly reside in the states with "liberal policies" and good schools. Poverty is most prevalent in the red states with bad schools.

Just for the record, I'm not the Harley being mentioned in the previous posts. I don't live in Little Rock. Tho, I do have a Conceal/Carry permit.
