VAN BUREN - Circuit Court of Crawford county opens here next Tuesday. It usually starts on Monday, but Judge Jeptha H. Evans made the change because when, late on Monday, the delinquent pleads that it is against his religion to travel on Sunday.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 17, 1962

A helicopter bringing Santa Claus into Little Rock this morning missed its mark at 7th and Louisiana and three were injured during the rush of adults and children to greet him. Police at the scene indicated that a gust of wind blew the ship 10 feet off its course.The victims were removed to Baptist Hospital by Ellis ambulance. A spokesman at the hospital later said none of the three was seriously injured. The helicopter was scheduled to arrive and drop down in a roped off area near the Downtowner Motel. But when the pilot missed his landing mark, and brought the ship down closer to the sidewalk at 7th and Louisiana, the crowd rushed away from the enclosed area to greet Santa. There, in the crush of excited youngsters on hand to greet Santa Claus, persons were shoved too close to the helicopter.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 17, 1987

Beginning next year, internships for black youths will be established in every department of the Arkansas Gazette, William Malone, the newspaper’s president and publisher, said Monday. Malone said there will also be an effort to increase the number of full-time minority employees at the Gazette. Malone made the announcement in a speech at the Urban League of Arkansas’ 11th annual Business, Industry, Labor and Government Luncheon at the Camelot Hotel.

FAYETTEVILLE - Students at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, will pay an extra 85 cents per credit hour to finance bonds for a new health center as part of a $116.9 million bond package approved by the university’s board of trustees Saturday. The University of Arkansas board of trustees unanimously approved $116,914,895 in bonds to fund several projects at the university’s Fayetteville campus, including a health center and housing complex. At the core of the plan is a 35,000-square-foot health center.
