Lottery director blames drought, gas prices for declining sales

— The director of the Arkansas Lottery says hot weather during the summer and higher gas prices in recent months are to blame for a downturn in ticket sales.

The lottery funds college scholarships. Games Director Bishop Woosley is set for an appearance Tuesday before a legislative oversight committee.

Woolsey said he would explain the games’ financial situation so lawmakers can decide how much to spend on scholarships next year. Any decision, however, would likely be made after the first of the year when a new group of legislators take office.

Current committee members have discussed possibly changing the format for scholarships so they go to students who are identified as most likely to keep them.

The “newness” of the games may be wearing off, too. They began in 2009.
