Mistakes cost Arkansas in finale

— In a series full of unpredictable outcomes, LSU avoided another and came out as predicted Friday at Donald. W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The No. 7 Tigers beat Arkansas 20-13 to keep their slight hopes of a Southeastern Conference championship alive. LSU needs wins from Auburn and Texas A&M on Saturday to win the SEC West and advance to Atlanta for the second consecutive year.

Arkansas gave the Tigers all they could handle in the final game of the season. After trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Razorbacks pulled within 17-13 in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard field goal by John Henson, who replaced starter Zach Hocker after a pair of first half misses.

Henson's second field goal came with the ball at the LSU 1. Arkansas (4-8, 2-6 SEC) opted for the kick instead of a fourth down attempt at the end zone to potentially tie the game.

The Razorbacks advanced into LSU territory twice more in the fourth quarter, but had no additional points to show. Tyler Wilson led Arkansas 60 yards in the game's final minute to the LSU 18, but a final pass to the end zone fell incomplete as the game ended.

LSU (10-2, 6-2) used a pair of turnovers on Arkansas' first two drives and capitalized on an untimely penalty to shut down the Razorbacks in the first half and take a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Arkansas advanced to the LSU 2 on the first drive, but lost the ball on a Dennis Johnson fumble. Wilson threw an interception on the first play of the next drive.

LSU capitalized on the Wilson interception with a 49-yard field goal by Drew Alleman and added a touchdown in the second quarter on a 22-yard pass from Zach Mettenberger to Jarvis Landry. The Tigers were aided on the touchdown drive by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Razorbacks' bench - the team's second in as many games - during a timeout before a third down play.

Arkansas pulled within 10-3 on Henson's first field goal in the third quarter, but Michael Ford's 87-yard kickoff return on the ensuing play set up the Tigers' second touchdown, a 1-yard run by Jeremy Hill with 9:03 left in the period.

The Razorbacks scored their only touchdown with 5:52 left in the third quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Mekale McKay. Wilson, a redshirt senior, broke the school's career passing yards record in his final game.

LSU won the rivalry game for the second consecutive season and third time in four years. The game was played in Fayetteville for the first time since 1992.

We can all thanks Jeff Long for this. JLS couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. Long ruined the season for all of these kids, the U, and the state. I think it's about time for him to step down.

Behind 7 points in the fourt quarter and fourth and goal inside the one foot line and JLS kicks a field goal. That may have been the stupidest call since Broyles pooch kicked against Baylor as time ran out in 1966.

Yeah, UA should've have gone for the TD on that 4th and less than 1, but I knew that they would give LSU all they wanted today.

I don't know who was responsible for the 'unsportsmanlike conduct' penalty: I do know it was dumb, dumb to do whatever caused it. This was the first game all year the Razorback players, for the most part, executed for four quarters. After DJ's fumble at the 5 yard line, I thought they would fold as they have before. They didn't. I'm proud of those guys for their effort even though they came up short. They gave themselves a chance to win which is all one can ask for. To the seniors, best wishes to you fellows for the future.

Agreed, you can thank Jeff Long for what was accomplished this season, and you can blame Bobby Petrino for what was not.

Yes, Jeff Long ruined this season. He didn't think through the consequences before he fired Bobby Petrino. Furthermore, he's probably not going to be able to hire a new coach that's as good as Petrino. I fear we've got many more years of mediocre football ahead of us.

Thank god its over ! If we (and recruits) have to wait till next year for a coaching announcement, that will further destroy this program, you've had since April JL and you almost shut down the program by brining in that clown JLS. We need a home run hire now !!!

It was a horrible way for a great group of seniors to go out but Long isn't the reason. It ALL belongs at Petrino's feet.
On another note. I was at the game and saw firsthand how classless SOME LSU fans are. While the U of A alma mater was playing they were disrepectful and cheering loudly. Again later when recognizing a native Arkansan the band strikes up. What a classless group of people.

Wow, what an ugly season. And to think Gearhead has given the AD a new $1 million contract and a $50,000 bonus for 2012 for the encouraging results. Yes, that is what it is all about: $$$$$$ and more$$$$$ and let the chips and fans fall where they may, they got theirs.
Long created a Frankstein with no electrical impulse and Igor and his "staff" were at the controls.
