Fewer Memphis schools to close in revised plan

— The unified school board tasked with merging the Shelby County and Memphis public schools has revised the list of schools picked to close.

The Commercial Appeal reported the board will consider a scaled-down version of a task force recommendation at a special meeting Thursday afternoon.

The Transition Planning Commission initially suggested closing 21 schools to raise the utilization rates of others and save taxpayers some $20 million per year. The revised list contains six schools: five elementary schools and one middle school.

If approved, the closings would raise to nine the number of inner-city schools closed to improve the district’s efficiency and performance since early this year.
