NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Authorities say one person has died in an overnight fire in North Little Rock.
The North Little Rock Fire Department says crews were called about 3:30 a.m. to 4500 Gum St. in reference to a single-family home on fire.
Capt. John Pflasterer said police driving by the area called the blaze in after spotting the flames from outside. Crews arrived to find a large fire.
"Once they got to a point where they could get in and get the fire out, they found the body on the bed," Pflasterer said.
The home, which sits at the corner of Gum and 45th streets near a Kroger store, showed signs of heavy fire damage at its rear, where a large, burnt hole was visible from just outside the backyard.
The fire victim's name has not been released, but Pflasterer said it was an adult woman. Officials from the Pulaski County coroner's office removed the body from the home about 7:15 a.m.
No other injuries were reported.
Pflasterer said the cause remains under investigation, but officials are looking at whether it was sparked by a space heater. He said such fires often occur as the weather gets cold.
"I'm not saying that's what caused it, but it's looking that way," he said. "But I don't want to say that's what it is yet."
