Superintendent of Public Works Henry Levinson is receiving letters daily from bidders who were unsuccessful in obtaining the contract recently awarded for the Third street viaduct, in which the city of Little Rock and the administration is being complimented for the manner in which the contract was awarded. The contractors declare that the fairness and absence of any secrecy in awarding the bids have impressed them as being a credit to the city.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 28, 1962

The Arkansas Educational Television Commission today asked the Legislative Council to approve a budget of $1,031,516, half of which would be federal funds, to establish a statewide network. T. E. Tyler, president of the TV commission, told the Democrat that the funds would finance the setting up of a statewide network even if the proposal to use the KATV (Channel 7) tower and transmitter site in Jefferson County cannot be worked out.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 28, 1987

Parents of four expelled Beebe students met withLittle Rock lawyer Darrell F. Brown late Friday afternoon to finalize details of a proposed federal lawsuit. James Barnes, Steve Squires, David Claiborne and Brian Feeman were expelled from Oct. 12 until January after admitting they consumed alcohol before a football game in Batesville. The youths currently are enrolled in other schools.

Why did the fiberglass pig cross the road? He didn’t. Somebody threw him into the middle of it. This isn’t the latest spin on an old joke.It’s part of the most recent string of assaults on Little Rock’s pink-hued, fourlegged friends, known as the “Pigs on Safari.” Over the past few weeks, three of the pigs - no strangers to vandals since their debut earlier this year - have been attacked. Sponsors are squealing mad and say they’re moving the creatively adorned swine, designed to raise money for the Little Rock Zoo, to more secure locations. “The past few weeks have been hell for these pigs,” said Jamie Garrett, publicity coordinator for the Junior League of Little Rock’s public art campaign.
