State lawmakers study impact of schools ruling

— Arkansas lawmakers say they’re unsure what steps to take next year to address a state Supreme Court ruling that said school districts that collect more in property tax revenue than state-mandated school funding levels can keep the money.

Legislators said Friday that they were still reviewing the high court’s decision that the state can’t redistribute the excess revenue from districts where higher property tax collections pushed the districts above total school funding levels set by state law.

Gov. Mike Beebe and other officials say the ruling undermines changes intended to provide equitable education funding.

The top House Republican has disputed that idea and says it doesn’t threaten those efforts.

Legislative leaders say they’re unsure whether they’ll pass a measure giving the state the right to redistribute the funds.
