Civil War Lecture

Dancing With the Villagers
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Hot Springs Village Animal Welfare League will hold a “casual chic” evening of dancing and entertainment in the Coronado ballroom. Doors will open at 5 for a catered buffet and cash bar. Demonstration dancing by the Arthur Murray dancers will kick off the evening’s entertainment, and Village couples will then take the floor for the Peoples’ Choice dance contest, in which the audience will place votes for $1 each. The event will also feature music from the Village Big Band and benefit drawings. Art Show and Auction
BENTON — The second annual Home Is Where the HeART Is Art Show and Auction, benefiting Habitat for Humanity of Saline County, will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, McGinnis Hall, 900 W. Cross St. The evening will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine, silent and live art auctions, and jazz music. Tickets for the event are $25 for general admission and $35 for reserved seating, which includes one seat at a table of eight. Car Show
BENTON — The Dixie Car Club will hold its 34th annual Open Car Show on at the Saline County Fairgrounds in Benton. Registration will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m., and the registration fee is $20. The show field will open at 7 a.m., and there will be on-site trailer parking if needed. Awards will be given at 3 p.m. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Saline County and the Kiwanis Christmas toy drive. Blessing of the Animals
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Animal Welfare League will sponsor a Blessing of the Animals at 2 p.m. under the outdoor canopy at the Ponce De Leon Center. Pastor Ross Worch of the Community of Joy Lutheran Church will officiate at the nondenominational ceremony and bestow a blessing on each pet in attendance. All Villagers and their companion pets are welcome. For safety, dogs must be on leashes and cats or other small animals in pet carriers. The ceremony will be held, rain or shine. The league will accept donations of dry cat and dog food for families in need. Cheri Prickett from Pet Projects Photography in Benton will be available from 1:30-4 p.m. at the event to take pet pictures.
Guest Vocalist Recital
ARKADELPHIA — The Ouachita Baptist University Division of Music will host Ouachita alumnus Stephen Ray, baritone, in a guest artist vocal recital with Cindy Fuller on piano. The free concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the W. Francis McBeth Recital Hall in the Mabee Fine Arts Center. BENTON — Bingo is held at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday and at 1 p.m. every Saturday at Benton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2256. Members and guests are welcome but must be at least 21 years old. Marathon in a Month
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Property Owners’ Association Trails Committee challenges Villagers to walk a total of 26.2 miles on Hot Springs Village trails during October. To participate, pick up an entry form and a list of trails at any trail head, beginning Monday. When participants have walked all trail routes, they need to complete and return the entry form to any trail box by Oct. 31. A picnic lunch will be held Nov. 13 at the Balboa Pavilion for all who complete the challenge. For more information, call the Recreation Department at (501) 992-0322.
Geocaching
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Geocaching, an outdoor game in which a GPS device is used for a scavenger hunt, is available in Hot Springs Village. Participants will pick up a geocaching flyer and gate pass at the Hot Springs Village Visitor Center; use a handheld GPS device to hunt for seven interesting places in Hot Springs Village; look for a container that may be partially hidden and collect an information card tucked inside; and bring all seven cards to the visitor center to be entered in a monthly drawing for a prize until March 1, 2013.
