Ballet Arkansas members on their toes

Ballet Arkansas will premiere five new “American Images” and reprise one for its season-opening concerts, 7:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lucy Lockett Cabe Festival Theater at Wildwood Park for the Arts, 20919 Denny Road, Little Rock, Eric E. Harrison writes in Tuesday’s Style section.

The ballet company, which has swelled from six professional members last season to nine, links the six dances together with a theme of “exploring America, the American spirit, and the American dream, inspired by artworks, ideas and events from the American cultural landscape.”

Having nine dancers provides a much wider palette on which to set works, says Marla Edwards, a former Ballet Arkansas soloist who is now its ballet mistress.

“It gives us a choice — the [guest] choreographers who come in to create had a larger pool to choose from.”
