Notice of appeal filed in redistricting case

— An attorney for a state senator and a group of east Arkansas residents has told a federal court he plans on appealing its ruling upholding the way the lawmaker’s district was redrawn to the U.S. Supreme Court.

James Valley on Wednesday filed a notice of appeal with the court over its September ruling rejecting Sen. Jack Crumbly’s lawsuit against the state Board of Apportionment. Crumbly and a group of residents in his district claimed the board intentionally diluted the black vote.

Crumbly is black and lost the May Democratic primary to state Rep. Keith Ingram, who is white. No Republican is running for the seat.

Valley said he’s talking with his clients about whether they want to proceed with the appeal, but wanted to file the notice by Wednesday’s deadline.
