Simmons First earnings fall 6.8% in 3rd quarter

Simmons First National Corp. posted a net income of $6.8 million for the third quarter 2012, down about 6.8 percent from the $7.3 million it earned in the third quarter of 2011, the Pine Bluff-based bank said Thursday morning.

It earned 41 cents per share, down from the 42 cents per share it earned in 2011’s third quarter.

The results were an improvement over the second-quarter earnings of $6.5 million.

“We are pleased with our third quarter earnings performance. We continue to benefit significantly from strong asset quality, which has resulted in a reduction in our provision for loan losses, and from our on-going efficiency initiatives that resulted in a decrease in our year-to-date non-interest expense," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer J. Thomas May said in a statement.

The bank will follow up with a live conference call to review its earnings announcement at 3 p.m. Interested parties may listen to the conference call by dialing (888) 438-5535 and asking for the Simmons First National Corp. conference call, the bank said.

The lender added that a replay of the call will be available until 5 p.m. Wednesday by dialing (888) 203-1112 and using the passcode 4128323, or at the bank’s website, simmonsfirst.com.
