Group aims to make poverty a priority in election

— In the midst of a political campaign focused largely on the U.S. economy, one group is arguing that Americans don’t have it quite so bad compared with people in other countries.

A nonpartisan group that fights global poverty is wading into the political arena, bringing conservative heavyweights such as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee together with Democrats to convince people that America shouldn’t give up on humanitarian aid.

Michael Elliott is the president and chief executive officer of the group, called ONE, which was co-founded by U2 lead singer Bono.

Elliott says that for all the hardships Americans are facing, there are other people around the world who are significantly worse off.

Elliott flew into Arkansas this week to speak about the organization at the Clinton School of Public Service.
