SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Three former Democratic presidential candidates paid personal respects Friday to former Sen. George McGovern.

Walter Mondale, John Kerry and Gary Hart - who like McGovern all spent time in the Senate before unsuccessful runs for the White House - led a crowd of hundreds of mourners. Hart, McGovern’s campaign manager in 1972, was the only one of the three to speak at the funeral.

“George McGovern was a voice of conscience for our nation in our time,” Hart said.

McGovern died Sunday at age 90 after a brief stay in hospice care.

The service, which included humorous tales from McGovern’s colorful past and concluded with a bagpipe processional, aired live on television in the state’s largest city.

Claimant against Facebook arrested

NEW YORK - Paul Ceglia, who sued Facebook Inc.

and its chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, was arrested Friday and charged with fabricating evidence to support his contention that he owns part of the world’s biggest social network.

Ceglia, who sued in 2010, faked e-mails from Zuckerberg, destroyed evidence and forged the 2003 contract on which he bases his contention, U.S. prosecutors said. Facebook has said from the start that Ceglia’s claim of part ownership is fraudulent.

Ceglia was arrested Friday by federal agents at his home in Wellsville, N.Y. He pleaded innocent later in the day to charges of mail fraud and wire fraud, according to Barbara Burns, a spokesman for William Hochul Jr., the U.S. attorney for western New York.

Ceglia was ordered freed on $21,000 cash bail, she said. His release is delayed until Monday to permit the government to appeal the bail order.

Ceglia’s lawyer, Dean Boland of Lakewood, Ohio, didn’t return voice-mail messages seeking comment on the criminal charges.

Sen. Reid hurt in Interstate 15 crash

LAS VEGAS - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was discharged from a hospital less than three hours after an apparent rear-end crash Friday afternoon on a Las Vegas freeway, a hospital spokesman said.

Reid, 72, suffered rib and hip bruises in the crash that happened about 1:10 p.m.

Friday on Interstate 15, staff members said.

The Nevada Democrat was taken to the hospital by his security detail as a precaution and walked into the hospital on his own.

His office said other members of the senator’s security detail and a staff member had minor injuries and also were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Six vehicles were involved in the apparent chain-reaction crash, including two Las Vegas police vehicles and two Capitol Police vehicles that were escorting Reid.
