State electric co-ops send workers to East Coast

— Repair crews with Arkansas Electric Cooperatives Inc. are on the nation’s East Coast to help restore power after a strong storm that hit the region.

Arkansas Electric Cooperatives Vice President Pat McClafferty said 34 workers left Saturday to help restore power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Arkansas Electric Cooperatives said it also sent 12 bucket trucks, three digger-derrick trucks, 10 pickups and other equipment to help in the power-restoration work.

McClafferty said the crews are working for Orange and Rockland Utilities based in Pearl River, N.Y.

He said the utility is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison Inc., which supplies power to New York City.

The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas are made up of 17 cooperatives that provide electricity to about a half-million customers in Arkansas and surrounding states.
