— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 12, 1912 IMBODEN - A unique public notice was published the first of this week by Mayor J.O. Sallee of Pocahontas, who is laboring to put a ban on the drinking of intoxicants in his city. The real object of the notice that has caused much comment is to warn persons who are addicted to the drink habit on the streets half intoxicated or otherwise on Sunday. The unusual notice read thus: “The usual fine will be doubled and the height of the collars worn by the offenders will not lessen the fine, either.” 50 YEARS AGO Sept. 12, 1962

Motorists going the wrong way on one-way Gum street are winding up in policemen’s hands by the score. Hundreds still try to go north on Gum skirtingcongestion at the north end of the Broadway Bridge. All wind up in a police trap charged with a one-way traffic violation. Gum has been changed to one-way south. Last week, police chief Ray Vick said he felt sure drivers would wise up to the situation after a day or two of ticket writing but they haven’t. Patrolmen are going home after their duty shift with writer’s crampsblamed on a tiresome day of penciling hundreds of tickets along the blockaded street.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 12, 1987

A federal judge Friday called Arkansas’ process for issuing criminal warrants without a neutral evaluation unconstitutional. The opinion stunned the state’s legal community and it prompted Arkansas’ attorney general to issue a letter in the afternoon warning all prosecutors in the state of new ground rules in arrest procedures. U.S. District Judge G. Thomas Eisele’s opinion questioned the legality of Arkansas law allowing prosecutors to bypass a neutral review by a magistrate or grand jury.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 12, 2002

Worried that terrorists will crash airplanes into stadiums, the Federal Aviation Administration tightened flight restrictions Wednesday, grounding - among others - the North Little Rock company that flies banners over University of Arkansas games. The FAA issued a special notice ordering pilots to keep planes at least 3.5 miles away from stadiums during major college or professional sports events.
