Baby leads the way to the dinner table

Baby’s first taste of solid food generally involves a spoon and often one parent or the other crooning about opening wide for a heaping helping of some kind of pureed goodness — or at least exaggerated mouth motions — to coax baby to open his mouth.

But when Holly Parker and her husband, Clayton, first offered their then 6-month-old daughter solid food, they just cooked it up, plunked it onto her highchair tray … and watched. The Parkers are partaking of baby-led weaning, a practice advocated by some young parents who let their babies feed themselves from a range of soft finger foods.
