— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 1912

Tiring of life away from home, Bethany Combs and Agnes Williamson, two girls who were masquerading in boys’ clothes when arrested on September 19 by Patrolman Gibson Thibault, left yesterday for Kansas City. Mrs. Y. Scoenfield, probation officer for Pulaski county, purchased female clothing for the runaway girls and after obtaining positions for them, kept watch of the girls. The probation officer surmised the girls would soon tire of the working for a livelihood, and when they asked to be sent home she procured tickets for them.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 1962

Gov. Faubus warned today that the arrest and imprisonment of Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett or any other state official would create a wasteland throughout the South for the national Democratic Party. Faubus made the statement in a formal press release which he said was unsolicited. The furor in Mississippi arose when federal courts ordered Barnett and officials of the University of Mississippi to admit a Negro, James H. Meredith, to the all-white institution.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 1987

Though angry at efforts to reopen schools, striking teachers picketed peaceably outside Little Rock School District offices Saturday as substitute teacher applicants signed up inside. “They aren’t prepared to deal with these kids. They won’t last,” one teacher said. “The schools will be in shambles in two hours,” said another. The district took 116 applications Saturday to staff the schools Monday if the teachers’ strike continues.

The Game and Fish Commission ended a neutral stance Thursday by voting to oppose a ballot initiative aimed at making some acts of animal cruelty a felony.During its monthly meeting in Little Rock, the commission voted unanimously to oppose Initiated Act 1, which was certified by the secretary of state’s office to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot as the Arkansas Animal Cruelty Act. Commission officials said the proposed measure is too vague and has too much financial support from national groups that oppose hunting and fishing.
