— One man was shot and killed and another wounded Thursday evening while they were changing a tire at West 16th and Bishop streets, Little Rock police said.

About 7:19 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at the intersection and found one man who had been shot at least three times, police spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said.

The other man was grazed by a bullet, but Davis said she did not know where he was hit.

The man who was shot several times was taken to UAMS Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition, Davis said.

The victim, who was identified only as a 20-year-old man, was pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m., Pulaski County Coroner Gerone Hobbs said.

The victims’ names were not released Thursday night and police were still working to determine if either man was a student at Arkansas Baptist College, which is near the scene of the shooting.

Davis said the wounded man also was in his early 20s.

The men were attempting to change a tire on a vehicle facing south on Bishop Street when they were approached by at least one man on foot. They exchanged words and the man who approached the victims opened fire, Davis said.

This is the 40th homicide investigation by Little Rock police this year and the first since Rafael Osorio-Tum, 22, was shot and killed Sept. 18 during a robbery at an apartment at 8501 Dreher Lane.

No arrests have been made in Osorio-Tum’s slaying as of Thursday night.

The Little Rock Police Department includes the May 23 accidental shooting death of Tyjuan Woodard, 14, in its homicide count.

At this time last year, the department had recorded 23 slayings, ending the year with 37. The department tallied 28 in 2010.
