“The most terrifying movie you’ll ever experience”?

Well, not quite. But maybe the most terrifying movie opening this week is likely Fede Alvarez’s Sam Raimi-approved remake of Evil Dead, which our critic Piers Marchant says faithfully reprises the original set-up “but loses the gist of almost everything else, including the sheer joy and creative spectacle of Raimi and original DP Tim Philo finding ways to utilize cameras never before conjured up on celluloid.”

And sadly, not only does it not live up to the original, Marchant says it doesn’t hold up “terribly well” on its own. Pity. At least he’s got a fairly illuminating interview with the director to explicate the rationale behind the remake.

Otherwise, you could try the long-withheld 6 Souls, though our guy Dan Lybarger says don’t bother. There’s a reason this would-be creepfest has been shelved for three years. Jurassic Park 3D is somewhat better, Lybarger says, but hardly improved by the retrofitted 3D.

On the other hand, MovieStyle editor Philip Martin loved the The Gatekeepers, an Israeli documentary that somehow corralled all the surviving heads of that country’s secret service, and got them to talk honestly about the difficult choices inherent in making war on terrorists.
